L’CHAIM
Better than walking a straight line

O ne of the keys to healthy living, it is
often said, is moderation in all things.

While I’m a big advocate of consuming wine
with my meals, and I enjoy beer, cocktails
and distilled spirits, I am not, and have never
really been, anybody’s idea of a party animal.

How one should determine the bound-
reviewing the portable AlcoMate Revo
breath test device, I thought I’d give it a
whirl. I’m fortunate enough to have never
come into direct contact with a breath tester
prior to unboxing the AlcoMate Revo. So
I’m not in any position to authoritatively
evaluate the manufacturer’s claims that its
product is “the most reliable, convenient and
accurate commercial” breath test device
available on the market.

We tested the device with the moderate and
mildly immoderate consumption of wines, beers,
whiskies, liqueurs and brandies.

aries between “not enough”, “just right” and
“too much” is not only subjective and nec-
essarily individuated, but also tricky. The
only certain way to determine this is
through a blood test. The next best thing is
via a breath testing device, which estimates
the alcohol in your bloodstream based on
the amount of ethanol the device detects in
the air you exhale.

So when I was recently approached about
Patio Now
Open! It is, however, approved by the Depart-
ment of Transportation, and by the Coast
Guard, and was selected by the Navy and the
Marine Corps for its alcohol screening pro-
grams. AlcoMate has also apparently cor-
nered the market on ease of accurate
calibration/recalibration due to its “revolu-
tionary innovation of PRISM technology
with state-of-the-art fuel-cell precision.” All
of which suggests it is more than sufficient

for home use.

I tried out the AlcoMate Revo unit sent to
me for review (full retail cost is about $220)
over the course of a week, along with a
merry band of volunteers. In the name of
science and consumer advocacy, we tested
the device with the moderate and mildly
immoderate consumption of wines, beers,
whiskies, liqueurs and brandies.

Sure enough, it seemed to work fine and
the results were consistent. I’m going to
have to presume accuracy here, but all of
my tests seemed to play out as advertised.

Bottom line: Anybody desiring a reli-
able/consistent, convenient, very easy to
use, and (I think) accurate commercial
breath testing device should consider
the AlcoMate Revo. The cost seems to
push it to the high-end of the market,
but if it can help keep one in check,
guide appropriate moderate alcohol
consumption, or help dissuade some-
body from driving while under the in-
fluence, then it seems a relatively small
price to pay. L’chaim! n
